Kitchen crafts: glass and wood decoupage ideas

There are many things you can craft for your kitchen to make it cosy and stylish. I love shabby chic or cottage chic styles. So, I try to craft things for my kitchen in soft colors. Here are two of my decoupage projects: decoupaged glass bottle vase and decoupaged wooden cutting board.

decoupage on glass and decouapge on wood

I used the same color vanila paint for both items. Both of these are usable crafts. The cutting board has the other side, where I can cut thing on. Only one side of it is decoupaged. And it is washable, too. I had to put several layers of polish on the wooden board and now I can wash and even lightly scrub it.

I have made another cutting board over a year ago and it is still in use and the decoupaged surface was not damaged by water. I do use a lot.

Decoupage on wood is easy to do. Here is a quick how to:

I painted one side of the cutting board with acrylic paint. Let it dry. Then I applied the napkin patterns using transparent acrylic furniture polish. Once it has dried up, I shaded the board a bit with acrylic silver paint and put several layers of polish.

Decoupage on glass: recycled glass bottle vase

I really love to upcycle or recycle glass bottles. Most people throw them away, so I ask them to donate the bottles to me and give them a new life.

In this particular glass bottle vase I have put two layers of decoupage to create texture on the bottle. Here is my quick tutorial.

First, I painted the bottle. Then I used pieces of old napkins to decoupage it with. Once they dried up, I have repainted the bottle once more. This created a soft texture underneace the paint.

Then I decoupaged the glass bottle vase with apple napkin and covered it with polish.

I have also used organic fiber rope to decorate the bottle. And I made rolled fabric flowers to decorate both the rope on the bottle and to make flowers for this decoupaged glass bottle vase.

More upcycling and decoupage ideas

I love to repurpose things and decoupage provides me with the easy way of doing so. In this post you’ll see two decoupage ideas: decoupage on trays and recycled tile.

plastic tray decoupage

plastic tray decoupage

I got two plastic and ugly green color trays at the flea market just for 50 cents. But they are perfect for decoupage. This one I have decoupaged with sunflowers. I can use it for serving food or carrying plates, but I love it on the shelf, too.

Here is the other decoupage idea on a tray, so to say:

plastic tray decoupage

plastic tray decoupage

It’s the same type of tray as the first one and I decoupaged it as a spring gift for one lady. It’s a sort of shabby chic style in decouapge. It’s a pity I did not have the crackle polish for it though.

So, here is a quick tray decoupage tutorial:

The difficulty with these trays is that the plastic is “slipery” so to say and the paint easily falls off of it. You may rub it with the sand paper first. I repainted the trays in white using acrylic paint.

Then I decoupaged them and covered with transparent polish. The rose tray, I did not like to leave it just white, so I dippied a napkin in some coffee and rubbed in onto the tray to make it look a bit old and shabby.

Finally, here is the recycled and decoupaged tile:

decoupaged and recycled tile

decoupaged and recycled tile

It’s a small and old tile about 2 by 4 inches. It was a white tile, so I did not paint it and just decoupaged it with the napkin. Then I covered it with two types of polish: the transparent and pearl ones.

Few weeks ago I bought this organic rope in the store. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. I have already used it in many crafts. But I love this one. I just used hot glue gun to glue the rope around the tile and make a handle over it.

So, now I can hang it on the wall as a small picture, or I can glue a recipe onto it or use it as a picture frame. I have made 3 of such tiles and gave two of them away putting on the printed Bible verses. They do make nice little and very inexpensive gifts.

It’s a nice way to go green with these decoupage ideas. I  hope you enjoy them, pin them and share them on Facebook or Twitter.

This set you may find in my Etsy store recycledcrafting. It’s a small vintage Soviet pan decoupaged with roses and adorned with old lace. It can be used as a wall decor item or as a photo frame. It is coupled by decoupaged and upcycled coffee can.

decoupage ideas: pin cushion

This is an orange foam plastic pin cushion decoupaged with napkin. I like the foam cushions more than I like fabric ones. It’s easier to stick the pins into it and they get better secured there. If you drop such a pin cushion, only few pins if any would fall out of it. It’s really easy to make, too. And it makes a great handmade gift.

I hope you enjoyed by decoupaged ideas and spring projects. You are welcome to leave a comment.

Easter egg crocheted basket

This is a tiny Easter egg basket. I crocheted the basket in two colors.

Then I made tiny colorful Easter eggs for it. The eggs are made in go green technology. I used old Soviet cotton wool technology of making toys. Our grandmas here used to make Christmas tree decorations and other toys for their kids out of homemade flour or starch glue and cotton wool. You may click a link about to see, how they are made.

After the Easter eggs have dried up I have decoupaged them over with napkins. This is a totally go green Easter egg basket. The basket is crocheted from recycled yarn.

Decoupage ideas: pink rosebud glass bottle

This is another one of my decoupage bottle projects. I simply love nice bottles and it’s a pity to throw them away. Decoupage gives them new life and allows you to make treasures from the trash.

Decoupage ideas: vintage Soviet vase decoupage on glass

It’s another attic find. We have discovered this vintage Soviet time vase on the attic of our old home.

vintage flower vase decoupage

It’s a large size glass vase back from Soviet times. It did not look good as it was, so I decided to paint and decoupage it. It’s amazing how sometimes things can direct your inspiration. First I repainted the vase into white with acrylic paint. I planned to use a pretty rosebud napkin pattern for it.

But once it dried up, it almost seemed like the vase changed it mind and decided to be painted with copper red and candy and heart print on it. It was so sudden. I never thought of such design. But it turned out cool and very fitting for the Valentine day season. So, now it make a great Valentine day gift. Check out my Etsy store RECYCLEDCRAFTING for more gift ideas.

Decoupage ideas: glass plate decoupage how to

It’s one of the decoupage ideas I wanted to do for a good while. I could not find a fitting glass plate for it though.

decoupage ideas: glass plate decoupage

decoupage ideas: glass plate decoupage

This plate is decoupaged in traditional Ukraine folk style. What you need for this decoupage project is to find a transparent glass plate. The trick is to decoupage the plate and still leave it usable.

This glass plate is decoupaged on the other side.

decoupage ideas: glass plate decoupage

decoupage ideas: glass plate decoupage

Here is how you do it. You clean and dry the plate well first. This gets is ready to be decoupaged. I used PVC glue, you may use mode podge or transparent furniture polish for your decoupage ideas.

Next, you cut out the napkin patterns and place them the best way onto the plate. You glue them the bright side down to the backward of the plate. This way, when you turn the plate around, you can see the pattern through the glass.

Let it dry well. Then you take a sponge and dip it into some colorful, golden, silver or other color acrylic paint. I used silver paint on the edges of the plate. Apply the paint with the gentle strokes of the sponge. Let it dry.

Now use white or any other color paint to cover the entire plate from the back end. Cover up the decoupaged fragments well, too. Let it dry. Finally, cover the back end with more polish to make it water proof. That’s it. It’s a pretty doable decoupage idea on glass, which gives you much space for your creativity.
