Decoupage on wood: old shoe trees into the wall art!

It’s been a while sinse I posted here. But I am back for a short post. For over 3 years I have been doing decoupage on wood and other surfaces and I still love it. I shopped on a flea market and found these:

old shoe trees

I got them both for a dollar and decided to turn into the wall art using decoupage and decor.

Here is what I got:

I painted them all over with white paint and then decoupaged. Covered with polsh and added few details and ornament, quite a few actually!

I also coupled them by an old peg (also decoupaged and decorated). Now I will use these on the wall above my shoe shelves.

Easter decor decoupage tutorial, DIY Easter wreath

I love upcycling and turning trash into treasure. Today I visited my good old friend and found a piece of old wood, some ledge and an old ceramic tile in his backyard. Here is what you can do out of these things. It’s my Easter door decor or wreath for this year and here is the tutorial or how you make it.

This is what I made in 1 hour. It’s  a little bird house our made out of the old piece of wood. I’ll hang it on my door instead of the Easter wreath. This house has a little nest with felted eggs in it. Below the house there is an old tile all decoupaged and I’ll write Easter on it later on.

Here is what I had to start with.

For my Easter decor DIY project I used a pretty small and almost square piece of wood, one old tile, some ledge, rope and a piece of tree bark.

The materials and tools needed for this easy DIY Easter decoupage project:

– white paint

– brown paint

– hot glue gun

– acrylic transparent polish

– a soft brush for decoupage

– napkins

Here the Easter door decor tutorial:

First paint both the tile and the wood (clean them well first) with the white paint and let them dry or dry them using a hairdryer. I glued together two pieces of ledge to form the roof and painted it brown.

Step 2 – Decopuage the tile and the piece of wood. I used two different kinds of napkins. You may find my decoupage how to here.

Step 3 – make a nest. I made it out of rope by coiling and gluing it together for this Easter wreath. I have also felted 3 small eggs out of wool and used green wool inside the nest to imitate the grass.

Step 4 is to cover the decoupage with polish, get it dry and glue the roof onto the bird house.

Step 5 – I glued some rope around the tile to make a frame for it and left the loose ends to fasten it to the bird house. I glued the bark in the bottom part of my Easter decor item and glued the nest onto the bark. I have also used this rope to make a look to hang the Easter door decor. Decoupage on wood: spice mortar and pestle with poppy flowers

Recently I have fallen in love with poppy flowers. I have already posted my Ukraine stlyle poppy flower clip or head whreath you can buy in my Etsy shop. Poppy flowers are very Ukrainian. They grow freely on our fields.

!!! Ukraine facts: it is illegal to grow poppies in your yard or garden  in Ukraine. If you grow 1 to 100 plants, you get fine, if you grow more, you get to go to jail!!!

So now I have decided to use them in wood decoupage on spice mortar and pestle.

Spice mortar and pestle

It’s a small spice mortar with pestle made out of wood. As usual, I repainted it with white water based paint and let it dry. Then I cut out poppy flowers and glued them to the mortar. Finally I used green shiny paint and wood polish to cover it up. Now the pestle and mortar have become usable once again. But I think them very pretty, too.

Kitchen crafts: glass and wood decoupage ideas

There are many things you can craft for your kitchen to make it cosy and stylish. I love shabby chic or cottage chic styles. So, I try to craft things for my kitchen in soft colors. Here are two of my decoupage projects: decoupaged glass bottle vase and decoupaged wooden cutting board.

I used the same color vanila paint for both items. Both of these are usable crafts. The cutting board has the other side, where I can cut thing on. Only one side of it is decoupaged. And it is washable, too. I had to put several layers of polish on the wooden board and now I can wash and even lightly scrub it.

I have made another cutting board over a year ago and it is still in use and the decoupaged surface was not damaged by water. I do use a lot.

Decoupage on wood is easy to do. Here is a quick how to:

I painted one side of the cutting board with acrylic paint. Let it dry. Then I applied the napkin patterns using transparent acrylic furniture polish. Once it has dried up, I shaded the board a bit with acrylic silver paint and put several layers of polish.

Decoupage on glass: recycled glass bottle vase

I really love to upcycle or recycle glass bottles. Most people throw them away, so I ask them to donate the bottles to me and give them a new life.

In this particular glass bottle vase I have put two layers of decoupage to create texture on the bottle. Here is my quick tutorial.

First, I painted the bottle. Then I used pieces of old napkins to decoupage it with. Once they dried up, I have repainted the bottle once more. This created a soft texture underneace the paint.

Then I decoupaged the glass bottle vase with apple napkin and covered it with polish.

I have also used organic fiber rope to decorate the bottle. And I made rolled fabric flowers to decorate both the rope on the bottle and to make flowers for this decoupaged glass bottle vase.
