Door repurposing: hanging garden table out of old wooden door DIY

I really love this door repurposing project. I always dreamed to get a hanging table in my garden pavilion, finally I have one. Here it is:

I love just the way it looks and feels, this repurposed door table is very usable. As you may see on this pic, it is coupled by a bench made out of an old door too. Here is a quick DIY course for it.

The table is fit into our summer pavilion, so we already had wooden planks to fasten it to. You may attach it to a strong tree outdoors.

What you need for this DIY door repurposing project:

1 old wooden door

Drill

Spade bit

Level

Strong rope or chain

Indeed, this is a very easy project, if you have the right equipment for it. The trick is to use a special kind of drill bit for making holes in the door. I am not sure how this tool is called in English, but I’ll provide you with its picture.

This is what it looks like. If you know its proper name, please add a comment to this post and I’ll add it in. – I have been able to find out what the proper name of the tool is. It is called spade wood bit. I asked a question on HOMETALK and got many great answers. You may join this great community and follow me there, too http://www.hometalk.com/busymomhelp.

You need to pick the tool of the right size to match your rope or chain diameter. We used organic rope for this project. It is strong enough and it looks so nice coupling the old door shabby chick surface.

Basically, my husband has drilled 4 holes in the 4 corners of the table, put in the rope and made large and strong knots on the rope from the bottom side to fasten it. Then he tied the rope to the pavilion roof.

This is what the surface of the old wooden door looks like. I still did not have time to sand it well and cover it with polish. But it wears nicely. My kids sometimes use the table as a swing and it holds perfectly. The tip is to use solid wood old door, so it can stand any type of weather outdoors.

This is an easy and quick repurposing project. I love hanging tables and it took just 2-3 hours for my husband to make it. You are welcome to pin or share this projects and check out on my other DIY or upcycling projects.

I am thankful to you, folks, for all the great responses and comments to my posts. I really and trully enjoy hearing from you.

When I started this blog a while ago, I had no idea of how posts I would have here or how many projects and recipes I would share. So, things did get a bit out of hand. I have TONS of great stuff here: easy and quick recipes, fabric flower projects, decoupage ideas and how-to and variuos useful DIY things.

But, they seem to be hard to find and poorly arranged. I’ll try to fix things up, if I can and reaarange the posts. But for now here is a quick tip on how to use this blog the best.

Blog tips: you may find a search box on the right hand bar. Just type in the things you like to find: recipes, decoupage on glass, DIY and go for it. Or browse the categories menu, as most of the posts are arranged under the categories and tagged.

Decoupage on wood: spice mortar and pestle with poppy flowers

Recently I have fallen in love with poppy flowers. I have already posted my Ukraine stlyle poppy flower clip or head whreath you can buy in my Etsy shop. Poppy flowers are very Ukrainian. They grow freely on our fields.

!!! Ukraine facts: it is illegal to grow poppies in your yard or garden  in Ukraine. If you grow 1 to 100 plants, you get fine, if you grow more, you get to go to jail!!!

So now I have decided to use them in wood decoupage on spice mortar and pestle.

Spice mortar and pestle

It’s a small spice mortar with pestle made out of wood. As usual, I repainted it with white water based paint and let it dry. Then I cut out poppy flowers and glued them to the mortar. Finally I used green shiny paint and wood polish to cover it up. Now the pestle and mortar have become usable once again. But I think them very pretty, too.

It is washable and usable. You can grind your spices in it and wash it with hot water. This set makes great and authentic gift. You can find it in my Etsy shop for a very appealing price. Feel free to Pin away.

Handmade fabric flower hair clip

This is my youngest daughter Kira wearing a wreath of poppy flowers made out of ribbon. I love poppies. They are so Ukrainian. You can find them growing on your fields or on the sides of the roads.

We had our apple harvest day at home. She just loves wearing poppies and I do too.

It works just well at a purse clip, hair clip or scarf clip for me.  I make these out of silk like ribbons and the heart of the flower is all handcrafted after the old “grandma” fashion. When I first discovered how to craft those tiny black threads with white ends I was much surprised. But they do make poppies look so natural.
