busy and crafty mom of two girls.

I am thankful to you, folks, for all the great responses and comments to my posts. I really and trully enjoy hearing from you.

When I started this blog a while ago, I had no idea of how posts I would have here or how many projects and recipes I would share. So, things did get a bit out of hand. I have TONS of great stuff here: easy and quick recipes, fabric flower projects, decoupage ideas and how-to and variuos useful DIY things.

But, they seem to be hard to find and poorly arranged. I’ll try to fix things up, if I can and reaarange the posts. But for now here is a quick tip on how to use this blog the best.

Blog tips: you may find a search box on the right hand bar. Just type in the things you like to find: recipes, decoupage on glass, DIY and go for it. Or browse the categories menu, as most of the posts are arranged under the categories and tagged.

Decoupage on wood: spice mortar and pestle with poppy flowers

Recently I have fallen in love with poppy flowers. I have already posted my Ukraine stlyle poppy flower clip or head whreath you can buy in my Etsy shop. Poppy flowers are very Ukrainian. They grow freely on our fields.

!!! Ukraine facts: it is illegal to grow poppies in your yard or garden  in Ukraine. If you grow 1 to 100 plants, you get fine, if you grow more, you get to go to jail!!!

So now I have decided to use them in wood decoupage on spice mortar and pestle.

decoupage ideas for kitchen

Spice mortar and pestle

It’s a small spice mortar with pestle made out of wood. As usual, I repainted it with white water based paint and let it dry. Then I cut out poppy flowers and glued them to the mortar. Finally I used green shiny paint and wood polish to cover it up. Now the pestle and mortar have become usable once again. But I think them very pretty, too.

It is washable and usable. You can grind your spices in it and wash it with hot water. This set makes great and authentic gift. You can find it in my Etsy shop for a very appealing price. Feel free to Pin away.

Handmade fabric flower hair clip

This is my youngest daughter Kira wearing a wreath of poppy flowers made out of ribbon. I love poppies. They are so Ukrainian. You can find them growing on your fields or on the sides of the roads.

We had our apple harvest day at home. She just loves wearing poppies and I do too.

It works just well at a purse clip, hair clip or scarf clip for me.  I make these out of silk like ribbons and the heart of the flower is all handcrafted after the old “grandma” fashion. When I first discovered how to craft those tiny black threads with white ends I was much surprised. But they do make poppies look so natural. Visit my Etsy shop or write me today to get your poppy fower clip or wreath.

My new upcycling Easter egg project

Upcycling Easter egg

Upcycling Easter egg

This is a fun Easter egg with a stand. I have made the stand for the egg out of an old coffee can. So that is why it is an upcycling project. The can is made out of glass. So, first I pained it with waterbased white paint, let it dry and decoupaged it.

I used the wooden egg for this project. I painted it as well and made just a little decoupage in the middle of the Easter egg. The rest of the egg I deocrated with organic threads.

So, that’s my decoupage on Easter egg project for this year. It’s a pretty jolly egg, too.

Old glass bottle into a candle stick – new decoupage project

It’s been a while since I posted new projects into my blog. I was really busy working and writing, as I am a copywriter. But I had some time to craft, too. Here is one of my little glass decoupage projects.

I have to admit that I have found this bottle somewhere on the lake bank. I live in a beautiful neighbourhood, but some people make this place a mess. I picked this bottle up and decided to make something special out of it.

The bottle is good, because it does not get turned over easily; it has a wide bottom. So, I decided to turn it into a candle holder. We need one because the do turn the lights off once in a while. BTW, I have found another similar bottle, but a bit smaller in size and I’ll make another candle holder out of it to match this one.

First, as usual I have painted the bottle with white acrylic paint. Then I added some blue shade into it and painted the bottle using a brush. I make upward strokes to add different colors and texture to the bottle. Finally I decoupaged it with spring flowers and covered with transparent polish. It’s a ten min project, if you use hairdryer to speed up the drying processes. But it looks nice. I have managed to turn a piece of trash into something useful and good-looking! Pin it, if you like it!

2013 in review

The stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 33,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 12 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Heart shaped brownie cake recipe

This is a delicious and “handsome” brownie cake. You can easily bake it in your microwave, if it has grill function.

The good thing is that you need only basic ingredients for this cake. Here they are:

1 dark chocolate bar
3 table spoons of cacao powder
3 eggs
5 ounces of sugar
5 ounces of butter (you can use 1 cup of vegetable oil instead, it makes the recipe healthier)
1 tea spoon of baking soda
4 ounces of flour
1/2 cup of yogurt (optional)

You melt butter and chocolate together. Add the rest of the ingredients to this melted mix and stir. Done.

The mix should not be thick. It should be something like sour cream in its texture. Pour the mix into the baking pan and set it into your oven or microwave. It takes me around 20 mins to bake my brownie cake.

Now, once it gets baked, you can eat it just like that or you can make a heart cake out of this brownie cake. Here is my brownie heart recipe. I bake two of the above mentioned cakes. Then it would be good to have a heart shaped baking pan, but if you do not have one, you can make one.

I used two pieces of cardboard to make mine. Here is what I’ve done. I cut to cardboard strips and stapled them together to form an outline of a cardboard heart.

Then I placed it onto the large plate and used sticky tape to fasten it there. I crushed both brownie cakes and made crunches out of them. Then I made simple cream out of sugar, vanilla and sour cream. I add few table spoons of sugar to the sour cream and heated it up.

I make the first brownie crunch layer in the heart shape on the plate, covered it with some sliced bananas and kiwi and poured some cream on the top. Then I covered the whole thing with the second brownie cake crunch layer. And, again, added some fruits and cream.

Finally, I spread some crunch lefts over and used some edible cake decorations on the top. I left the cake in the cardboard shape for an hour to get soaked up with the cream and stick together. Then I removed the cardboard border and the brownie cake stayed in the heart shape!
